Questions, answered plainly.

What people ask before, during and after a solar, battery or electrical project. If your question is not here, ask us directly.

Solar

Does solar work on cloudy days in New Zealand?

Yes. Panels still generate in cloud and rain, at lower output than in clear sun. A design should use local conditions across the whole year, not a single bright day, which is why winter generation is part of any sizing conversation.

Do you fill the roof with as many panels as possible?

No. The array should follow how the property uses electricity, the usable roof, shading, inverter limits and what you want the system to do later. Unused roof is not automatically useful generation.

Which way should the panels face?

In New Zealand the sun tracks across the northern sky, so north facing roof planes generally produce the most across a day. East and west planes still work and can spread generation into the morning and late afternoon, which sometimes suits how a household uses power.

Do panels still produce in a New Zealand winter?

Yes, but a winter day is shorter and the sun is lower, so a system makes less than it does in summer. A useful design looks at the whole year, not the best month.

Does shade stop a system working?

Shade from trees, a neighbour's roof or a chimney reduces output on the affected panels. It does not always rule a roof out. It is something to look at on site before the layout is fixed.

Can panels go on a flat or low-pitch roof?

Sometimes. The roof still needs a sound structure, safe access and a way to mount the panels so they drain and stay secure. That is checked with the roof, not assumed from a photo.

Will solar remove my power bill?

No. A connected home can still pay daily charges and for electricity used when the panels are not covering the load. Solar reduces what you import. It does not promise a zero bill.

What is the difference between kW and kWh?

kW is the size of the system at a moment. kWh is the electricity used or generated over time. A power bill is mostly about kWh. The system size in kW is chosen from that use, the roof and the equipment.

Can more panels be added later?

Sometimes, if the roof, the inverter and the switchboard have room. It is easier to allow for that in the first design than to assume every system can grow.

Is exported electricity the same as using it in the house?

No. Electricity used in the house avoids buying it at your import rate. Electricity sent to the network is credited at the export rate, which is usually different. They should not be treated as the same saving.

Battery

What does a battery actually change?

A battery stores surplus generation for later, typically the evening. Backup during an outage is only available where the inverter, the battery and the selected circuits are designed for it. The useful amount of storage comes from the load, not from a standard package.

Can storage be added after solar is installed?

Often, if the inverter and switchboard leave room for it. It is simpler to decide during the original design. An existing system needs to be assessed before a battery is added.

Will a battery keep my whole house running in a power cut?

Not automatically. Backup has to be designed: which circuits stay on, how much power they draw at once, and whether the inverter can isolate the property from the network. Many systems back up selected essential circuits rather than the whole house.

Do I need a battery if we are home during the day?

Often less so. If most of the electricity is used while the panels are generating, more of that power is used directly. A battery matters more when a lot of the use is after sunset.

What battery sizes do you work with?

The storage sizes Nord configures are 5, 10, 15 and 20 kWh. Which one suits a home depends on evening use and the existing or planned solar. It is a starting point, not a promise that one size fits the property.

What happens when the battery is full?

Surplus solar can be used in the house or exported, within the limits of the system and the network connection. A full battery does not mean the panels stop for the rest of the day.

Where does a battery usually go?

Somewhere practical and safe, often near the switchboard or inverter, with the clearance the equipment needs. The exact place is chosen on site. A chat cannot confirm a wall or a garage.

Can I have a battery without solar?

A battery can be charged from the grid, but the usual reason to add one with Nord is to store solar for later. Whether a battery on its own is worthwhile depends on the tariff and the loads, and that needs a proper look at the bill.

Can I choose which circuits stay on in an outage?

Only if the system is designed for backup. Essential circuits, such as lights, a fridge or internet, are the usual choice. The whole house is not the default.

How long will a battery last?

That depends on the product and how it is used. Nord does not publish a single lifespan or warranty term on this site. The documents for the equipment you are quoted are the place to read that.

Electrical

Who carries out the electrical work?

Electrical work is carried out by certified electricians. Documentation and sign off follow the requirements that apply to the job.

What paperwork should I expect?

You should receive the records the installation requires. That can include a certificate of compliance and the system information needed for your own file and, where it applies, your retailer or lines company. The pack depends on the work.

Will my switchboard need upgrading?

Sometimes. Older boards may not have the space, protection or condition needed for solar, storage or an EV charger. This is checked during the assessment so it is part of the proposal, not a surprise on the day.

Does the existing wiring get checked?

The assessment looks at the supply, the switchboard and what the new equipment needs to connect to. It is not a full rewire of the house unless that work is agreed.

Can an EV charger be part of the same job?

It can be planned with the solar and the switchboard. A charger still needs its own assessment of the supply and where the car will park. It is not assumed to fit every board.

What if the property has three-phase power?

Three-phase changes the inverter and how the load is spread. Tell us if you know the supply is three-phase. If you are not sure, it can be checked from the board.

Will I need a different meter?

Solar that exports usually needs metering that can record electricity in both directions. Your retailer or meter owner arranges that. Nord does not control when they attend.

Can solar run the hot water?

An electric hot water cylinder is a large daytime load, so it can be a good use of solar if it is controlled to heat while the panels are generating. Whether that suits your cylinder is part of the design, not a given.

Is there isolation so the system can be switched off?

Yes. A grid-connected system includes isolation so it can be shut down for work or an emergency. You are shown where that is at handover.

Who signs off the electrical work?

The electrical work is tested and documented for that job. The certificate and other records you receive depend on what was installed. This page does not list a registration number.

Grid

Can every system export electricity to the grid?

No. Connection and export limits are set by the local lines company and by the equipment. Approval is not automatic. The design follows the connection requirements for that site, and the application is lodged with what the network asks for.

What is the difference between grid tied and off grid?

A grid tied system stays connected and can import or export electricity. An off grid system runs without that connection, so generation, storage and backup generation all have to carry the property through winter. The site and how it is used decide which is appropriate.

Do I have to change power company?

No. You can usually stay with your retailer. They need to know about the solar so export credits and the plan match the connection. Nord does not choose your retailer for you.

Why might export be limited?

The local lines company sets how much a connection can send back. The inverter is then set to that limit. A larger roof does not override the network.

Does the house still use the grid at night?

Yes, unless a battery is covering that use. Panels do not generate at night. The grid, or stored energy, supplies the evening and overnight loads.

Who applies to connect the system?

The connection application is part of the job and uses the details the lines company asks for. Approval is their decision. A design does not mean the connection is already approved.

Does solar keep running in a power cut?

A standard grid-tied system switches off in an outage so it cannot energise the lines. Backup during a cut has to be designed with the right inverter, battery and circuits.

Is a rural connection treated the same as a city one?

No. Rural supplies, transformer limits and distance from the road can change what can be connected. The site, not a typical suburban example, decides it.

When is off-grid realistic?

When the property can carry its own power through winter, including storage and usually a backup generator. It is a different design from a normal grid-connected home, and it is only proposed where the site can support it.

Do daily charges stay if I export a lot?

Usually yes. Daily fixed charges are for being connected. Export credits do not cancel them.

Installation

How long does an installation take?

It depends on the roof, access, switchboard work and whether storage is included. Your proposal sets out the expected installation time for your property before anything is booked.

Will the power be off during installation?

Supply is usually isolated while the system is connected and tested. The timing is agreed before the day so you know when the property will be without power.

Do you need to walk on the roof?

Yes, to fit the array, unless another safe method is agreed. Access, pitch and the roof surface are checked first so the work can be done without guessing.

How much work happens inside the house?

The inverter, the battery if there is one, and the switchboard connection are inside or in a garage. Cable routes are agreed so they are tidy and as short as is practical.

What if the weather is bad on the day?

Roof work waits for conditions that are safe. If a day has to move, you are told. The electrical work inside can sometimes continue when the roof cannot.

Do I need to be home?

Someone needs to give access at the start and be available for handover. You do not need to watch the whole job. The power-off window is agreed beforehand.

What is left when the crew finishes?

The system is installed, labelled and tested, and packaging is taken away. You get the documents for that job and a walk-through of how to see what the system is doing.

Will I be able to see what the system is producing?

Most inverters include monitoring. How you view it depends on the equipment. It is set up at commissioning and explained at handover. It is not a promise of a particular phone app.

Do my neighbours have to approve it?

A normal roof array on your own property does not need a neighbour's approval. A shared roof, a body corporate or a heritage rule can be different, and those need to be known before the design is fixed.

Can you install at a business or a farm as well as a house?

Yes. Homes, businesses and rural properties are all part of the work. The design follows that site's use, roof and supply, not a house template.

Design

What do you need from me to design a system?

Recent power bills are enough to start. A year of bills or interval data from your retailer makes the design more accurate. Photos of the roof and switchboard help, along with any plans for an EV, heat pump or extension.

Why do you ask about future loads?

An EV charger, a heat pump or an electric hot water upgrade can change the right array, inverter and switchboard. Designing for them now can avoid replacing equipment later.

Do you visit before a price is given?

A published package price is not how Nord works. A useful proposal follows a look at the property, the usage and the electrical supply. The quote form is how that starts.

Are photos enough?

Photos of the roof and the closed switchboard are a good start. They do not replace a site look where access, shading or the board condition is unclear.

Is the Solar Calculator the final design?

No. It is a preliminary size from the usage and an address lookup. Roof space, shading and the switchboard can change it. It is not a quote.

Why is the system sized to my use instead of a standard kit?

Two homes with the same number of bedrooms can use very different amounts of electricity. The roof and the hours you are home change it again. A kit ignores that.

Can the design include solar and a battery together?

Yes. They are designed as one system so the inverter, the storage and the switchboard are chosen to work together. Compatibility is confirmed for that design, not assumed for every product.

Should the system be sized to export as much as possible?

Not usually. Export rates are often lower than the price of the electricity you buy. Using more of the solar in the house is the more useful aim, within the roof and the connection limit.

Can I change the design after I see it?

Yes. A proposal is for discussion. Panel count, storage and what is left for later can be adjusted before anything is booked.

Do businesses use the same design process?

The steps are the same: usage, site and supply, then a design. A business often has a larger daytime load, which can suit solar well. The equipment is still chosen for that site.

Maintenance

What maintenance do solar panels need?

Panels are generally low maintenance. Occasional cleaning and a periodic system check are a sound way to confirm performance and safety. Shading, soiling and inverter alerts are worth acting on rather than assuming output stays constant.

Do you support a system after it is installed?

Yes. Maintenance and support for installed energy systems is part of the work Nord Electrical offers. The scope of any visit is agreed for that system.

How often should panels be cleaned?

Rain does a lot of it. Cleaning is worth considering when bird droppings, dust or tree litter are sitting on the glass and output has dropped. Do not walk on the roof to wash them.

What should I do if the monitoring shows a fault?

Note what the inverter or the app says and contact Nord. Do not open electrical enclosures. A fault message is not something to clear by resetting equipment repeatedly.

What if trees grow into the sun path?

New shade lowers output. Trimming is usually the owner's decision and may need an arborist. Tell us if the shade has changed and the production no longer matches the design.

Does the inverter need servicing?

It should be checked if it shows a fault, if production falls away, or at an agreed service visit. There is no single service interval published here.

Does a battery need regular maintenance?

Keep the area clear and dry, and pay attention to alerts. Do not stack things against it or block its ventilation. Any deeper check is a service visit, not a home task.

Can another electrician work on the system later?

Yes. You are not locked to Nord for ever. The records from the original job help whoever works on it next. Isolation and the equipment instructions still apply.

What if I sell the house?

The system stays with the property unless a removal was agreed, which is uncommon. Pass the documents and the monitoring login to the next owner.

Can I book a check of a system Nord did not install?

Ask us. We can look at an existing solar or battery system, but we will not confirm compatibility or a fault until it has been seen.

Costs

How much does a system cost?

It depends on electricity use, roof conditions, equipment and whether storage is included. Nord Electrical prepares a proposal for the specific property rather than quoting one price for every site. The assessment is the starting point.

Is the configurator on this website a quote?

No. It is a preliminary concept to start a conversation. It is not a design, a price or a prediction of savings. Final system sizing requires a site and electrical assessment.

What changes the price from one house to the next?

Electricity use, roof access, the number of panels, the inverter, storage, switchboard work and the connection all move the price. That is why two neighbours can be quoted differently.

Why isn't there a package price on the website?

A package price would ignore the roof and the bill. Nord prices the system for the property. The quote is the price.

Is switchboard work included?

Only when it is needed and written into the proposal. If the board has to be upgraded, that is itemised. It is not hidden inside a panel price.

Is a battery a separate cost?

Yes. Storage is additional equipment and installation. A solar-only proposal and a solar-plus-battery proposal are different prices.

Can you tell me the savings before you see the bill?

No. Savings depend on your kWh, your import rate and how much of the solar you use yourself. A dollar figure without those is a guess, and we will not make one.

Do you publish a payback period?

No. Payback needs a real installation price and your tariff, and even then it is an estimate. It is not a promise.

Do I pay a deposit from this website?

No. The forms ask for a conversation. They do not take payment, and sending one does not confirm a booking.

Do you offer finance on this website?

Nothing on this site is a finance offer. If a payment option is available for a job, it is explained in the proposal, not assumed here.

Process

What happens after I request a quote?

Your project details are reviewed against the property type, location and how you use electricity. Nord Electrical then contacts you to confirm the details and, if it is a fit, arrange a site assessment. You do not need an account.

Do I need to know my annual electricity use?

A recent bill is enough to start. If you do not have the figures, say so on the form and we will work from what you have.

What is the usual order of work?

Assess the property and the usage, design the system, install it, commission it, then hand it over with the documents and support information.

What should I put on the quote form?

Your name, a phone or email, the address, and whatever you know about usage. A bill or a daily kWh figure helps. Leave unknown fields rather than guessing.

Do I need an account?

No. There is no customer login. The quote form and the calculator do not create a profile.

Is the chat the same as asking Nord?

Nori can explain usage, solar and batteries. It is not an electrician, and a chat is not a quote or a booking. Use the quote form, phone or email when you want Nord to look at the property.

Does sending a form book a site visit?

No. Nord reads the enquiry and contacts you if it is a fit. A visit is arranged after that, not by the form itself.

How soon will someone reply?

This site does not publish a response time. If it is urgent, call 022 598 8456.

Should I use the calculator before the quote form?

It helps, because you will see a preliminary size from your kWh. You can also go straight to the quote form if you would rather talk it through.

Can I stop after the assessment?

Yes. An assessment and a proposal do not oblige you to go ahead. Nothing is booked as an installation until that is agreed.

Ask about your property.

Tell us about the property and what you want the system to do. We will come back to you to arrange the next step.
