Most problems with solar systems are decided before installation day. These are the questions worth answering first.
The roof
- Condition and remaining life of the roofing
- Material, long run metal, concrete tile, clay tile, membrane
- Usable area on each plane, clear of ridges, vents and edges
- Structure, fixings and access for safe installation
The electrical side
- Switchboard condition and space
- Supply capacity and the main protection
- Cable route from the array to the inverter
- Where the inverter and any battery can safely go
The network
Connecting generation to the network requires the lines company's approval, and export may be limited on some connections. That can affect the system's size and the value of a battery.
The household
- When electricity is used, not just how much
- Plans for an EV, heat pump, electric hot water or extension
- Whether backup during outages matters
- How long you expect to stay in the property
The proposal
A good proposal names the equipment, shows the array layout, explains the expected generation across the year and separates the electrical work from the panels so nothing is assumed.
